I love reading works by Oswald Chambers and one of my favorites is My Utmost for His Highest. He asks the question, “Has God trusted you with His silence?” When I pray but feel like answers don’t come, my first thought is that the answer must be ‘no’ or that maybe prayer doesn’t really matter. I don’t know about you, but I really like visible responses…an answer I can check off on my prayer list. Maybe God has something else in mind for me. Can God trust me with His silence? What if, in His silence, He is trying to teach me more about Himself? Chambers says, “When you cannot hear God, you will find that He has trusted you in the most intimate way possible-with absolute silence, not a silence of despair, but one of pleasure, because He saw that you could withstand an even bigger revelation.” The thing I love about God’s silence is that it becomes contagious-it gets into you and causes you to be more confident than ever because you know God has heard you. When we realize prayer is really all about glorifying God (and not our wish list), the silence isn’t quite so bad. It becomes actual evidence that He is bringing about His purposes. Are you hearing ‘nothing’ today?
