Embarking on a mission trip is more than just an opportunity to serve. People go on these trips because they are often motivated by the desire to serve others, to be a blessing and to make a difference in the world. But they often don’t expect the level of profound impact and personal growth that going might have on their own lives! I have been privileged to go on many of these trips and I often get asked if it’s really worth the investment? Without hesitation, I give a resounding YES!
Why do I believe short term mission trips are worth the investment?
- New Perspective – Spending a week in a different culture opens your eyes to a different worldview and way of life and it gives you a greater awareness of being part of the global body of Christ. I remember the first time I walked through a city market in Ecuador. The sights and smells reminded me that I was definitely not in Missouri!
- A Shared Journey – It’s the relationships we build and the way we see God at work in and through one another that is often the most impactful part of a short-term mission trip! Being part of a team gives you the chance to process your experiences together and learn from one another, and often leads to deep friendships that will last for years to come. Long after the mission trip is over, there will be conversations and laughter as team members reflect on their time serving together.
- Learning from long-term missionaries. – For many, one of the most impactful parts of going short-term is spending time with long-term missionaries. It’s such a privilege to learn from their experiences and be inspired by their stories. You can also be a blessing to them by supporting their work. While in the Philippines, we asked a national missionary there if he could have any piece of equipment, what would it be? He replied, “An overhead projector.” Overhead projectors had long been outdated in the states, but it was something that he knew would enhance his ministry. We were able to provide him with one, but we were the ones blessed to be able to encourage him.
- Adventures and Memories – You will be blessed as you experience the warmth, and hospitality of another culture. You will be challenged to step out of your comfort zone and experience new adventures as you are the hands and feet of Jesus to those you are serving. I will always remember when we first arrived at Casa de Mi Padre and were welcomed with the kids on the porch in their pajamas singing ‘My Father’s House.’ Those memories are priceless.
What if you aren’t able to go, but you want to have an impact on the mission field? You can pray for those who are going and you can financially support those who are following God’s call to serve as short term missionaries. How is God calling you to be involved in missions?
